I live in Windsor Locks. Our neighborhood was without power for 10 days!!! I live in a ranch style home with a small wood stove in the basement. I will never live anywhere again that doesn't have an alternate source of heat. We were able to keep the temp in the house between 60 - 65 degrees even on the coldest nights during that 10 day period just with that great little wood stove. It also has a flat top so we were able to cook soups and heat up hot water for tea and instant coffee, ramen noodles, rice a roni, etc. Was a drag heating up hot water and carrying it upstairs to the kitchen. But we faired far better than some of our neighbors.

Lesson learned - would have been nice to have some paper plates and styro cups to cut down on trying to heat water to do dishes!!! My food storage of 2 weeks is now being increased to 90 days minimum!!! Would like to have a 6 month supply and ultimately a year supply. I also learned that we needed more emergency candles, and lantern oil. Rest be assured we are accumulating, little by little, those types of supplies also. I am quickly becoming a believer in prepping after that experience!

Hi everyone,

So do we have any fellow Gardeners out there? I'm ordering my seeds and will start Stocking up on Soiless mixes and seed Starting mixes.. Hoping to really get a great garden going and stocking our pantry with wholesome foods for the coming 2011 year and beyond. One of the great things that I find is that we still have Open Pollinated seeds and the Monsantoes of the world haven't reached their corporate goal of being the only seed holding company in the world. Open pollinated and heirloom seeds can be saved and grown every year. This is all I will be buying this year.. One of the great things about saving seed is that you acclimate the seed to your personal environment within your "small bit of earth". You do this buy saving seed from the best fruits and plants you grew looking for traits within those crops that appeal to you personally. The other great thing about saving seed is that when the time comes that seed becomes scarce you will have food.. Smitty Cityhomesteader

Well, job loss is still increasing. Even where I work we were just notified that they had to lose 8 full timers and 13 part timers. But what the company does is offer the employees to transfer to other areas and if no one volunteers they do the seniority bit and then if any refuses well you know what happens there.

I'm not too sure what I'd do but for now I am doing what I can to stay in the game and continue working by picking up extra hours when they call me or if other co-workers give up hours I pick it up.

This company is pretty sly in my view because they offer you to transfer and if the certain few do not transfer by seniority methods and get layed off or quit, they really can't collect unemployment because they were offered jobs at other sites the company has.

Thank you all for the comments.

Aphrodite, I meant that it can be difficult to prep in Connecticut, only because I have yet to see a local store you can walk into that carries some of the usually associated things such as Mountain House #10 cans or 55-gallon water drums at that time. I have since found a local source for the 55-gallon food grade plastic water containers located in North Haven. I will be posting more about water and this source shortly.
